The former Regional Court building — the "Palace of Justice" (1891–1895, architect Franciszek Skowron). This monumental building in the central part of the city finished with a pediment featuring a balustrade and an attic sculptural group (1893, sculptor Leonard Marconi). The northern vestibule is adorned with an allegorical sculpture symbolizing justice (1896, sculptor Antoni Popiel). The second-floor hall is decorated with plasterwork ornamentation and wall paintings by artists of the Jan Matejko school. The building's style is Historicism, utilizing Neorenaissance and Neobaroque forms. Its principal (western) elevation faces Kniazia Romana Street, while its side (northern) elevation faces Halytska Square. Today (2009), it serves as building No. 19 of Lviv Polytechnic National University.
Architecture
The building is three stories tall, constructed of brick, plastered, and elongated in floor plan. The components of the building's spatial composition include a central avant-corps and two flanking wings, symmetrically arranged and complemented by lateral avant-corps.
The façades are rusticated and horizontally articulated by cornices. The avant-corps are adorned with pilasters and columns of the Ionic order; the central one finished with a pediment featuring a balustrade and an attic sculptural group (1893, sculptor Leonard Marconi). The windows are arched and rectangular in shape. The central entrance is framed by a portal with a semi-circular top and a cartouche.
The internal layout is of a corridor type, with single-loaded rooms and vaulted ceilings. The corridors feature groin and pendentive vaults.
The vestibules are decorated in the Neorenaissance tradition. The northern vestibule is adorned with an allegorical sculpture symbolizing justice (1896, sculptor Antoni Popiel). The second-floor hall is decorated with plasterwork ornamentation and wall paintings by artists of the Jan Matejko school.
The "Palace of Justice" stands as an example of an administrative building from the Late Historicism era.
