The Vilna Ukraina Print Works and Publishing House was built in 1974, Volodymyr Doroshenko, architect. The style of construction – Industrial Soviet Modernism. As of 2012, the premises are occupied by the Vilna Ukraina Publishing offices, Ukrvydavpolihrafia, the editorial offices of the Vysoky Zamok newspaper, Ukrainskyi Shlyakh, Aviso, and Pricekurant magazine. Remaining warehouse and office space is occupied by a car dealership, a bank branch, a pool hall, as well as commercial printers.


The Vilna Ukraina Publishing House was established in 1967 for publishing regional newspapers like Vilna Ukraina, Lvovska Pravda, and Leninska Molod and other local papers (Publishing House archives).

At the time, Lviv Regional publishing was not able to keep up with the demand for both local editions and new publications out of Kyiv and Moscow. All major newspapers were printed with templates flown – or trained – in from Moscow (Hrinkevych, 2005, 149).

In the print shop two double-spindle rotary presses could produce four and six-page newspapers, and one single-spindle press handled small format (A2) four-sided newspapers. Their combined capacity did not meet the organization’s publishing demands, giving rise to the urgent necessity for a new print and publishing center to handle Lviv publications.

The building project plans were expedited and in 1970 construction of a new printing facility on Stryyska Street – then occupied by small, rural buildings – has begun. The printing facility, warehouse, and parking garage were ready for use by 1972 (Hrinkevych, 2005, 149).

The publishing capacity of the new facility was over one billion four-page newspapers in A2 format annually: a remarkable achievement in Lviv publishing (Publishing House archives).

Publishing students were able to observe production first-hand; photographic images were received from wire services and immediately transferred to film and sent to the photo-typesetting division. From the negative, a zinc flat panel was produced which was then sent on to layout and production (Hrinkevych, 2005, 149).

In December 1972, the publishing house received its first edition of “Pravda” over the wire from Moscow. In time, eighteen newspapers would be published in this manner including runs of over 2,000,000 for Kiev-based newspapers (Hrinkevych, 2005, 149). The volume of publishing and the number of newspapers published grew annually.

In 1974, construction of the publishing facilities was finally completed. Internal communications were aided by a pneumatic tube system and a switchboard with one hundred separate internal phone lines. The completion of the publishing house was a big event in Lviv’s history. Newspapers for the six western Ukrainian oblasts were produced at the plant, using nearly two freight cars of paper every day in the process.

Employee working conditions also went into the planning of the plant, which boasted a cafeteria with seating for 120, as well as a dining area and an assembly hall for 500. The plant employed nearly 500 workers, and its production capacity grew constantly into the mid-1990s (Hrinkevych, 2005, 149).

In 1989, a major remodeling of several areas of the plant was undertaken, including plant modernization, the enlargement of the newspaper division, and the construction of a new printing plant.

In the 1990s, as the publishing industry was undergoing change, the enterprise began reducing its capacity. The plant had specialized in newspaper production and when demand dropped, production volume dropped with it, significantly impacting the financial stability of the publishing house.

In November of 1996, the publishing house was converted into Vilna Ukraina Publishing, a publicly traded enterprise of the State-owned Ukrvydavpolihraphia. The concern was founded by the Ukrainian State Television and Radio Broadcast Committee (Publishing House archives).

With the reduction in publishing, the firm experienced severe layoffs, resulting in vacant offices and spaces throughout both the administrative wing and the publishing house. Eventually, these working spaces came to be filled by various private commercial enterprises.

As of 2012, Vilna Ukraina Publishing continues to focus on newspaper publishing and other printing services. Printing is done on an offset rotary press – “Noraset 170/70” – capable of printing fifteen thousand four-sided sheets in A2 per hour with an excess load capacity of 20%. For color printing – handbills, posters, labels, books, brochures, multi-color, small-run newspapers) the shop uses a wide-format two-color “2POL-71-2” offset press (Publishing House archives), which underperforms modern four-color offset printers.

The print works is located in south Lviv, in the Syhnivka industrial zone at the T-intersection of Volodymyra Velykoho (formerly, Artema) and Stryyskoi Streets.

The intersection is a lively transportation hub, and the complex is set slightly back from Styyskoi Street, and is fronted by a large, concrete slab square dotted with lawn parking strips. Sometime later, the square was converted into a fenced parking lot. The plant structures are arranged around a commercial center. This 13-story office block houses the publishing house and stands on a two-story pedestal, with three stories for newspaper publishing, three stories for a print shop and paper warehousing, a power plant, compressor, and garage (SOE Design Institute, Chapter 3, 1989, 14).

The publishing house has a lobby, offices, a cafeteria seating 120, an assembly hall for 500, a demonstration hall, a communications wing, warehouses and service facilities (SOE Design Institute, Chapter 1, 1989, 55).

The spatial arrangement of the publishing house structure manifests two parallelepipeds (a geometric object with six faces, all parallelograms): a two-story horizontal pedestal and a thirteen-story vertical tower. Characteristic of spatial dimensions in classical modernism, these two objects are set at right angles to one another in a visually-consistent perpendicular on both the horizontal and on the vertical. The pedestal’s broad side faces Stryyskoi Street, and perpendicular to the tower’s lead edge, which faces Volodymyra Velykoho Street (SOE Design Institute, Chapter 3, 1989, 14).

The newspaper center houses its core shops – formatting, printing, and assembly – in the building facing Volodymyra Velykoho Street. Here, one finds the dispatch center, operations, and an area for paper preparation and facilities for employees.

The printing center houses engineering and other services, a shop producing consumer items, a section for typesetting of brochures, standard forms, and labels. The newspaper and printing houses are connected by an elevated walkway on the second floor.

The building office space is laid out along hallways. In the publishing tower, discrete offices line both sides of hallways which are joined by double staircases. The tower stands on an east-west axis with wide bands of windows on its northern and southern edges. Two elevators located at the end of the corridor provide the primary connection between floors. A monolithic concrete slab spiral staircase connects the lobby with the second story hall. The fluid form of the staircase adds contrast to an otherwise stark interior design.

The brick interior walls are plastered and painted in oil paint, and offices may be finished in wallpaper, ceramic tile, sheetrock, and natural stone. Offices enjoy parquet flooring, while the technical department and warehouse floors are covered in linoleum. The lobby/foyer and cafeteria have mosaic flooring (SOE Design Institute, Chapter 1, 1989, 55).

The structure itself is of precast reinforced concrete frame with conventionally spaced 6x6 cross-beam columns, interspersed with rigid diaphragmatic supports. The construction envelope consists of free-standing, attached light-concrete paneling (thickness, 240 mm), and bands of wood-frame aluminum windows (producer: Moscow Window Factory #4). The foundation is constructed of 30x30 cm reinforced concrete pilings, 10-12 meters in length. The assembly hall is covered with specially manufactured truss-work. All buildings are flat-roofed. Despite the structure’s flaws – largely attributable to shoddy workmanship and materials – it has a pleasant line and a distinctive character, rendering the Vilna Ukraina Print Works and Publishing House a remarkable specimen of Soviet industrial modernist architecture in Lviv.
