The current Ukrsotsbank building stands on the site of a townhouse constructed in 1830. Located at the rear of the townhouse was the popular Ivan Franko Cinema (originally opened in 1912 under the name "Bajka"). In 1967, an electric ticker display was installed above the main façade, streaming news headlines from the Soviet news agencies TASS and RATAU via scrolling text. On the night of March 26, 1991, this electronic board caused a fire in the building, leaving its structural shell standing with hollow window openings until 1998. During the Postmodern festival "Vyvykh," the scorched walls of the building were partially painted, earning it the informal nickname "the dislocated building" ("vyvykhnutyi").
