Vul. Samchuka, 14 – Lviv Polytechnic National University's sports building
The sports premises are located in the former Racławice Panorama building, which stands close to the main alley of Stryiskyi Park's upper terrace. It was constructed in 1893 according to the design of architect Ludwik Baldwin-Ramułt, and reconstructed in 1908. In 1944 during the bombardment of Lviv, the building was severely damaged. The panorama was conserved, dismantled and kept in chests placed in the Bernardine monastery until 1946 when it was moved to Wrocław, Poland. The building was in derelict state until 1960s, when it was repaired and adapted for the needs of Lviv Polytechnic sports department.
Architecture
The building is located on the upper terrace of Stryiskyi park, very close to its entry gate, to the left from its main alley. Architect Ludwik Baldwin-Ramult designed it as a three-story brick rotunda covered with a dome, and a massive portal featuring semicicular doors. An inscription "Racławice" was placed above the entrance.
Behind the building there was the ending of a railway track, which was constructed for the needs of the so-called Eastern Trade Fair (Targi Wschodnie), held annualy in the park during the Interbellum period. The track led from the Persenkivka station along Kozelnytska Street. Its preserved fragments became a part of a narrow-gage railroad for children arranged in the 1950s (Lemko, 2009, 294 – 295, 500; Кotlobulatova, 2006, 117).
The modern building resembles its predecessor in the silhouette. It is polygonal in plan, and comprises 16 glass facets which provide good natural lighting. The building's original height has been kept, but four stories have been arranged instead of three. The entrance has been arranged via a one-story, rectangular in plan construction which serves as a vestibule.
Sportsmen train in five halls. The game hall located on the fourth floor is the largest. It has a parquet floor, and small platforms. It is designed for playing basketball, volleyball, and mini-football. Besides the halls, the building has also some personnel facilities to serve the needs of the university's sports department. There is an exposition of awards obtained by students.
Open asphalt playgrounds located nearby are also designed for sports.
