Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital

Story

In the late 1920 the struggle against tuberculosis gained a great relevance both in Poland and in the world. According to the popular belief,  fresh air was the best cure for this disease. Therefore, it the Patients Mutual Aid Fund of Lviv chose a forested area near the Vysokyi Zamok Hill for a children's sanatorium. Adolf Kamienobrodzki, a renowned architect, was commissioned to prepare a design.

In a short time in 1927-1929 the architect prepared two projects with identical building layout, but with radically different façades. Kamienobrodzki was a champion of classical architectural forms, so he used modernized classical forms at first. However, when the drawings were approved, the architect decided to remake the project in the Modernist style, the work taking six months. It was in this style that the building was erected. This can be explained by the fact that in the late 1920s classic forms started in general to be replaced in Lviv architecture by more rational ones. Besides, the Patients Mutual Aid Fund tried to reduce the cost of the facility as much as possible.

The sanatorium consists of a complex of buildings. The biggest (main) of them is located amidst the park on top of the hill, among the trees. Its main façade is elongated and symmetrical, with two avant-corpses on the edges and one in the center, joined together by balconies. In the south, at the foot of the hill, there are two buildings with a much simpler architectural design. They flank the entrance to the complex from Lysenka street.

The complex was envisaged as a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis only in the beginning. When the construction was completed in 1931, the Hospital of the Social Insurance Institution in Lviv (Pol. Szpital Ubezpieczalni Społecznej we Lwowie) was opened here. The children's sanatorium was moved to the village of Holosko, where the People's Sanatorium for tuberculosis patients functioned from 1910. It was decided that a locality outside of Lviv, among pine forests on the slopes of the Roztochchia hills, is much better than a one in a densely populated part of the city. In the early 1930s the institution in Holosko was called the Hospital of the Lviv Association for Combating Tuberculosis.
