Vul. Horodotska, 285 – cinema (no longer in operation) ID: 1755

The building at vul. Horodotska, 285 located within the premises of the Narodnyi Dim, was home to a cinema that operated under several names and owners: "Metal" (1946–1949), the "V. Chkalov Cinema", and "Arlekino" (1949–1990).

Story

In 1946, the "Metal" cinema began operating in the former Narodnyi Dim of Lviv's Syhnivka district at vul. Horodotska 295 (now No. 285). The auditorium was designed for 150 seats, with approximately two screenings held per day. Later, in 1949, it was renamed in honor of Soviet brigade commander and pilot Valerii Chkalov.

By 1953, the V. Chkalov Cinema employed approximately nine people. The cinema hall had a capacity of 200 spectators, with an average of four screenings daily. In 1966, the cinema saw approximately 234,000 visitors. The Chkalov Cinema also operated two branches in Rudno and Sknyliv. Overall, the 1966 performance target was 79% fulfilled. Due to weak, non-commercial films, only two to four tickets were typically sold per day at the Sknyliv location.

In 1990, the seating capacity increased to 220, with five to six screenings held daily. However, the cinema continued to fall short of its quotas. The hall's occupancy rate in 1990 was 19.8% (down from 22.2% in 1989, when it had 121,700 visitors compared to 74,400 in 1990). The V. Chkalov Cinema was eventually renamed "Arlekino".
