Vul. Halytska, 4 – former Kapitulna (chapter house) townhouse ID: 2217

The three-story building is located among terraced houses, with its façades facing vul. Halytska and Katedralna Square. The Boim Chapel adjoins it from the north. Constructed in 1779-1780 according to a design by Antoni Kosyński, the building is a characteristic example of late eighteenth-century residential architecture. It is an Architectural monument of local significance (protected site No. M-1247). Today, it serves as a residential building, with the ground-floor premises occupied by the 'Mapa' cafe and the 'Cafe 1' wine bar.

Story

The building at vul. Halytska 4, formerly designated by conscription numbers 29-30 (old) and 22 (new), was owned by the Roman Catholic chapter, which is why it was called "Kapitulna" (Chapter House). Its construction began on June 9, 1779, on the site of a demolished old building, according to the design of master builder Antoni Kosyński. He also supervised the construction work. For the completed project, Kosyński received four zł on September 5, 1778. The building was finished in 1780. The tiled stoves were installed by master Ignacy Zelakiewicz.

In 1910, the building housed the workshop and hat shop of Antoni Kafka, as well as the porcelain and glass warehouse of Tadeusz Okornicki.

By decision of the Lviv Regional Executive Committee No. 442 of September 6, 1979, the building at vul. Katedralna 5 was included in the local register of architectural and urban planning monuments under protection No. 1247.

Architecture

The building is a three-story, six-window structure that has retained all of its characteristic features typical of late eighteenth-century architecture. Its façade is decorated with Tuscan pilasters and simple, unprofiled window trimming. The Mapa coffee shop is located on the ground floor, which is emphasized by a belt course. The entrance to the premises is from Katedralna Square 5.
