Vul. Doroshenka, 19 – residential building ID: 397
This residential building with shops (1908–1909, architect — Volodymyr Pidhorodetskyi) is a work of Late Historicism (Neobaroque). Its interiors preserve their original stucco ornamentation. It serves as a striking example of the use of Neobaroque forms in late 1900s architecture and represents one of the finest instances of Late Historicism featuring lightly interpreted Baroque motifs.
Architecture
The building is constructed of brick and plastered, rising four stories and following a nearly rectangular plan with a driveway leading to an intimate interior courtyard. The façade features rich plasterwork decoration and is articulated by massive semicolumns situated above the balcony balustrades. The top floor is decorated with Neobaroque pediments.
The primary architectural emphasis of the façade's composition is the vertical articulation provided by Corinthian columns on the second and third floors. Set between these columns are large rectangular windows featuring profiled trimmings on the second floor, while the third floor features semicircular windows with archivolts decorated with keystones. A balcony with an openwork wrought iron railing spans the entire width of the second floor. The third-floor balconies, positioned between the pilasters and featuring similar railings, are supported by sub-balcony bowls and consoles. On the upper part of the façade at the fourth-floor level, six allegorical statues by sculptor Piotr Wójtowicz are set against a backdrop of Tuscan pilasters. The building is topped at the center by an attic with lunettes and two triangular gables on either side. Large oval windows decorated with plasterwork are located in the center of the gable fields.
The enfilades of the large apartments and their grand scale, combined with the exterior design, give the building a palatial character. The stucco ornamentation has been preserved in the interiors.
This remains a brilliant example of the use of Baroque forms in architecture from the end of the first decade of the 1900s.
